Description

A pair of English Regency period mahogany pedestals of lovely quality.
Early 19th century, circa 1810.

Wonderful flame figuring, colour, and original, well-patinated surfaces.

Nb. The left pedestal contains two fitted drawers. The right pedestal retains the original zinc linings to retain heat, and has slotted shelving for plate warming. Both concealed doors are opened with side-recessed external push-button operated locks.

Both cupboard doors are line inlaid.
Often described as antique ”dining room pedestals”.
Old repairs entirely in keeping with age.

The well-cast mounts are period but not original. These lion mask ring handles were much favoured during the Regency period, and illustrations can be found in ‘Ackerman’s Regency Furniture’ publ. by Pauline Agius, to mark the centenary of H. Blairman and Sons, (Crowood Press, Wiltshire, 1984) p. 152, and in ‘Thomas Hope, Regency Designer’, edited by David Watkin and Philip Hewat-Jaboor, publ. for The Bard Graduate Centre for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design and Culture, New York, (Yale University Press, New Haven and London) p. 124.

Traditionally these were used in dining rooms often surmounted by cutlery urns or candelabra. These days they are well suited to a multitude of purposes and look imposing displaying sculpture, flower arrangements, urns, lamps, candelabra etc.
