17th century German Baroque carved mirror
Rare German carved Baroque (Barock) oval mirror, circa 1620-1630.
The frame is superbly carved. The cresting with two cherubs supporting a cartouche and seated upon displaying eagles.
The base centred with a grotesque mask typical of this early period. The oval frame is flanked by boldly carved Barock scrolls and foliate decoration, the inner frame well carved with egg and dart. Minor losses entirely consistent with age.
Heinrich Kreisel illustrates a related mirror (Neuburg/Donau, 1620/1630) on plate 669 in ‘Die Kunst des deutschen Möbels
Von den Anfangen bis zum Hochbarock’, Verlag C.H. Beck München, 1974.
