Description

Nb. This dynamic antique marble bust of a Roman (as yet to be identified) in a toga with a leopard’s head clasp, is raised on a variegated grey socle.

Some tentative comparisons have been made to Caracalla, also known as Antoninus. Possibly a ‘Grand Tour’ item.

The Grand Tour was an extended excursion to the Continent undertaken by English gentlemen to enhance their appreciation of the culture of the main European cities such as Paris, Rome, Florence, Venice, Pompeii, etc. Often antiquities and replicas were brought back to England to form collections.
