Description

Early 18th century burr walnut bureau with secret compartments.

Excellent colour, good size and proportions, ONLY 3′ WIDE.

The fall front supported on lopers revealing a beautifully fitted, walnut veneered, ‘stepped’ interior with an arrangement of concave fronted small drawers and pigeon holes. The writing surface fitted with an apparently original beautifully patinated leather insert.

The central door faced with an inlaid star.

Fitted with a slide and a ‘well’ (with a secret release), dating this English bureau to ca. 1730. The cockbeading is attached to the carcass.

With two short and two long working drawers.

Feather banded throughout and veneered in well figured burr walnut.

Bun feet old replacements. Handles correct for period but not original.

NB. An unusual feature of this antique bureau is that the simulated three drawers above the pigeon holes are in fact constructed as one long drawer. There is a secret release to lock/unlock the sliding lid to reveal the well.
