George I walnut bureau bookcase/cabinet


An early 18th century English antique walnut bureau bookcase/cabinet. Ca 1725.

An early 18th century English antique walnut bureau bookcase/cabinet ca 1725.

The top section with a bold broken arched pediment centred by a brass finial.
The mirrored door, above two candle slides, opens to reveal a fitted interior of drawers and shelving.

The bureau base with a fitted interior, a concealed well beneath a slide concealing secret drawers, over two short and two long drawers.

The whole veneered and feather-banded in well figured walnut.
All surfaces retaining good colour and patination.

Nb. Brasses are period, but not original. Mirror plate and brass finial are later replacements.

Ralph Edwards in his ‘Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture’ illustrates a ‘bureau cabinet’ of similar form (1st edition publ. 1924-25, p.78, illustr. 19, V&A Museum).
