A rare and elegant small George II period mahogany bureau cabinet/ bookcase. Of good colour and patina.

The top section with a bold dentil cornice, consisting of a single moulded door with later mirror plate, re-entrant corners and with a pull-out candle slide. The interior with three adjustable shelves.

The writing section (or ‘desk’) fitted with an arrangement of small drawers centred by a chamfered door. The fall with an old, vellum green gilt-tooled writing surface.

The base is fitted with graduated cockbeaded, oak-lined drawers, and is raised on bracket feet. All in excellent condition.

Antique English bureau cabinets/ bookcases of these rare narrow proportions are much sought after for today’s smaller rooms. The candle slide helps date this cabinet to the mid 18th century. This small, elegant, quintessentially English bureau cabinet is of a pure form.
