Description

An early 18th century (Queen Anne period) carved walnut games or card table, circa 1710.

Veneered in well figured walnut with herringbone feather bandings.
The bold fold-over outset shaped top opening to reveal candle stands and guinea wells.
Raised on slender cabriole legs with lappet carving and pad feet.

This fine, rare antique has a superb rich golden colour and beautiful original waxed surfaces.

NB. The hinged (‘concertina’) action allows for positioning a leg at all four corners, demonstrating its early 18th century sophistication and, of course, stability.

Lit:
‘The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture’, Ralph Edwards CBE FSA, Hamlyn publ., London, 4th impression 1972, ill. 7, p. 519: note the lappet carving. Furthermore vis. ill. 10, p. 52 [sic]; vis the circular corners dished for candle sticks, and wells for counters.
