Description

An antique (Queen Anne) walnut veneered & feather-banded double dome bookcase/ cabinet of good colour. The two door glazed upper section surmounted by a bold double dome.

The lower section with bank of two short and three long working drawers.

This early 18th century walnut bookcase is veneered throughout in figured walnut and is feather banded.
The bold cross grain mouldings are particularly well executed. The cabinet doors retain shallow, hand bevelled glass. Bun feet relocated in their original positions. Finials later. Brassware possibly original. The top has the additional feature of double dome returns, ie to the sides.

Nb. This form of Queen Anne walnut display cabinet is much rarer than the conventional, and considerably more costly, walnut double dome bureau bookcases of this period.
It can serve either as a bookcase or display cabinet. Over the last 60 years we have only handled three period cabinets of this form.

Lit:
See Ralph Edwards CBE, FSA, ‘The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture’, Hamlyn Publ., London, 4th Impression 1972, p. 97, ill. 19, for a similarly configured double dome.
