Description

A 19th-century oil on canvas in the manner of Zacharias Noterman. Monkeys in an interior.

Well painted very decorative oil on canvas very much in the manner of Noterman.

Monkeys gambling, playing cards and smoking clay pipes in an interior, apparently a tavern. An amusing scene with interesting architectural features, wall paintings, a roaring fire, and an intriguing glimpse into the adjacent room.

In its original giltwood, silk, ebonised and decorated frame, and in super condition throughout, retaining its vivid colours.

Zacharie Noterman (1820-1890). Aka Zacharie Notermann or Zacharias Noterman, is a Belgian painter and engraver, specialising in the painting of scenes of monkeys ”behaving” like humans, up to their various antics.

Tavern-genre scenes were a popular subject of the so-called Golden Age of Dutch Art during the 17th-century. They experienced a rebirth in the 19th-century.

Background:

Zacharias lived for a while in Antwerp, before settling in Paris, where he dies in 1890.

In particular he has a fascination with monkeys dressed in costumes and practising human activities (trades, contemporary hobbies and hedonistic activities, such as playing dice, cards, smoking etc).

During his career, he participated in the Salon of painting and sculpture in Paris.
