Description

A rare German Baroque (Barock) carved oval mirror.
Early 17th century, circa 1620-1630.

The frame is superbly carved. The cresting with two cherubs supporting a cartouche, and seated upon displaying eagles.
The base centred by a grotesque mask typical of this early period. The oval frame is flanked by boldly-carved Barock scrolls and foliate decoration, the inner frame well carved with egg and dart. Minor losses entirely consistent with age. Plate later.

Heinrich Kreisel illustrates a related antique mirror (Neuburg/ Donau, 1620/1630) in ‘Die Kunst Des Deutschen Möbels Von Den Anfangen Bis Zum Hochbarock’, Verlag C.H. Beck, München (1974) plate 669.
