Description
A highly decorative and unusual antique English Chinoiserie tripod table, the top painted overall with figures in an exotic landscape of pavilions, a lake with tropical vegetation, and a junk. Decorated on a cream and polychrome ground. The slightly raised leaf-carved edge with traces of gilding.
Supported on a carved, stop-fluted tripod column with ‘birdcage’ support and acanthus gilt heightened carving at the knees. The feet terminating in well carved grotesque masks, all with further traces of later gilding. The highly desirable ‘birdcage’ allows the top to both swivel and tilt. The underside with an old Pitt & Scott depository label.
From a private West Country Collection. Possibly formerly with Malletts, Bourdon House, London, WI.
By repute in the collection at Claremont House, Esher, home of Lord Clive of India.
