Description
George II period, ca 1750.
Crisply carved top rails, shaped veneered seat rails, raised on cabriole legs which are well carved with shells, acanthus and honeysuckle decoration. The legs terminate in ball and claw feet.
All in the best quality tight grained Cuban mahogany.
The overstuffed slip-in seats have been re-covered in antique hand woven silk.
All in excellent condition.
Sothebys, New York, sold a similar pair of side chairs in the Devenish Collection Sale on 24th April 2008, lot 68, @ USD $55,000.
Note the similar shaped seat rails, dished paper-scroll top rail, carved knees, and well carved ball & claw feet.
