Description
Good faded lacquer, back splats well painted in the exotic ‘Chinoiserie’ manner.
These are later versions of chairs originally ca. 1730.
The ‘Venetian’ red is particularly good and is what you would expect to see in period examples.
All these red lacquer gilt decorated chairs are in excellent structural order with no evidence of breaks, joint weaknesses or worm so often encountered in chairs of this form.
Each back splat is centred with a rather naive exotic animal heightened in gilt.
There are ‘C’ scrolls behind the cab legs. The cab legs are united by ‘H’ stretchers. Upholstered in velvet.
Although these chairs are out of period, they certainly have ‘the look’.
Giles Grendey 1693-1780.
