Description

An English 18th century carved mahogany library armchair, or bergère. George III, ca 1780.

This antique Sheraton period armchair, sometimes described as a ‘bergère’ (bergere) chair, is raised on reeded square tapering legs which merge, headed by a carved rosette panel, to support the arms via free standing carved reeded shaped columns.
The square moulded show-wood top rail is centred by a raised and fluted panel. All in excellent condition and ready-to-use.

An elegant, well proportioned and comfortable drawing room armchair of very good rich colour and patination. Also suitable for use as a desk chair.

Vis. Ralph Edwards CBE FSA ’The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture’, Hamlyn, London, Fourth Impression 1972, p. 160, fig. 175, for a chair of similar design including paterae and fluting, in The Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
