Description

English antique walnut wingback armchair ca. 1740.

George II period high back wing armchair of generous 18th century proportions.
Raised on well carved cabriole legs, cabochons to the knees, with ball and claw feet.

Fitted with a floral chinoiserie loose cover with piping.
Good size and extremely comfortable.

See Ralph Edwards ‘The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture’ p. 135 ill. 71.
He mentions these chairs were referred to as ‘easie chairs’.

N.b. In general the higher the back, the earlier the date.
It is worth noting that these highback wing armchairs are much sought after by American collectors.
See Wallace Nutting ‘Furniture Treasury’ of American furniture ill. 2058. He places a slightly later date of ca 1750 on a very similar wing chair, no doubt because of the ball and claw feet.
A related wing armchair sold at Sotheby’s London, in May 2017 for £16,875.
