Description

George II English walnut wing armchair ca. 1740.

A large size and well proportioned example of a high back English early Georgian period walnut wing armchair.
The shaped seat raised on cabriole legs with well carved ‘lapping’.
The similarly carved back legs prominently splayed.
Upholstered in high quality brushed faux suede and close nailed.
This antique wing chair is of excellent golden colour and patina.

Ref: BHA960

NB. Interestingly this form of ‘lapping’ to the knees was much favoured by New York chair makers of the mid-18th century.
Literature: See ill. 24 p. 337, ‘American Furniture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Late Colonial period: The Queen Anne and Chippendale Styles.
This carving is also encountered on Queen Anne period cabriole legs and prefaces a transition into carved surfaces e.g. shells and cabochons becoming ever more prevalent as the 18th century progresses.
