Hope you are all enjoying Spring…
We’ve been rather distracted here with a rear extension hence far fewer postings, photos etc of late.
Spot the dog…

However we have acquired some new stock so do let us know if you are looking for anything.
Antique dealing and collecting today – some observations of John’s:
Try to stay focused on your personal taste, as there are plenty out there now doing their best to promote their own agenda. Look for guidance from successful dealers/ collectors with a track record of remaining successful for a minimum of 30 years. Continuity will be a reassuring indicator.
Dealing and collecting is a hugely personal activity thus ought to be pursued meticulously on a relatively small scale. Many have failed while attempting to expand premises, stock and staff with the objective of maximising profit. Observe those thriving in 2025, and ask yourself how they continue to be in business.
Knowledge/ experience is ‘king’ and can only be acquired over time. The best and wisest old-time dealers and collectors are often descendants of pre-war families with no more than three or four participating members who have acquired specialist knowledge in items they are passionate about.
I was fortunate to have learned an enormous amount from a modest but hugely successful old-time dealer who started out before WWll. His words of wisdom resonate even now, many years after his passing: “Only deal in or collect antiques you are passionate about and never allow your stomach to let you know you had a difficult day after returning empty handed from Edinburgh, Norwich or Lands End. Discipline in buying nothing means you have got it about right…”.
Incidentally, this is a great time to invest in fine furniture, to add to your collection.
All the best, John.
