Description

An 18th-century gilt japanned / lacquer chinoiserie cabinet.

Displaying exotic birds, pagodas, rock work over water, and floral decoration. The fine and beautifully-chased gilt brass/metal strapwork mounts are all original throughout. The elaborate engraved escutcheon plate with original working lock retains its period key.

Decorated with the whimsical interpretation of the ‘India’ taste so fashionable at the time, namely exotic birds, pagodas, rockwork, trees and flowers over a watery scape.

Internally the hinged doors with their fine original surfaces with dragonflies, butterflies and floral decoration. The sides are well decorated with flowers and butterflies, and retain their original carrying handles.

The cabinet now with adjustable glass shelves within for drinks/ cocktails.

The whole is raised on a later red japanned stand on cabriole legs – 96 W, 57 D, 75 H.

In good country house condition overall, entirely commensurate with its age. Highly decorative and sophisticated. Useful storage ready to use in any room of the house.
