Description

Ed Cockey Lacquer Longcase Clock.

A good antique English, blue ground Chinoiserie lacquer, longcase clock by Ed. Cockey of Warminster 1669-1768.
Edward was the most famous of the Cockey family of clockmakers /watchmakers largely because of his commissions for complex, massive and costly, month going astronomical clocks for the nobility. Especially one for the great hall at Longleat, Wiltshire for Lord Weymouth in 1707.

Another Ed Cockey Lacquer Longcase Clock, believed to have been a gift to Queen Anne for her drawing room at St James’ Palace, is now in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Another is in the British Museum.

This longcase clock dates from Ca. 1720. The five pillar 8 day fully functioning movement strikes the hour on a bell. The movement has been fully overhauled and carries a 2 year guarantee.

NB. Over the years we have had a mere handful of clocks by this rare and eminent maker, this one would rank amongst the best.
The case is typical of Ca. 1720 Chinoiserie with figures, landscapes and pagodas. All in remarkably original state with very minor restorations and refreshings, perfectly acceptable after some 300 years.
