Description
This large scale antique walnut armchair has very generous proportions and is well carved.
Apparently retaining the original close-nailed tapestry cover, which still exhibits vibrant colours.
Early 18th century, ca. 1720.
Nb. The Régence period in France occurred between 1715 and 1723, when King Louis XV was a minor, and France was governed by Philippe d’Orléans (1674-1723) a nephew of King Louis XIV (1638-1715).
During the Régence we see a transition away from the rich heavy ornate styles of the Louis XIV period, into the first quarter of the eighteenth century when the Rococo gradually becomes more fashionable amongst the aristocracy.
Nnb. An English chair of this period, quality, and these proportions would cost approximately three times as much as this example.
