Description

A large English chinoiserie japanned tôle (tole) tray table.

Regency period, early-19th century, circa 1810.
The gilt heightened exotic landscape set on a Venetian-red ground. Depicting a watery seascape amongst pagodas, pavilions, rockwork, trees, and a courtly lady beside a bridge, all raised on its Oriental open-fretted stand.

A red ground is most sought after, as in this octagonal shaped example with raised edges. The decoration has survived in a virtually untouched state. The stand is almost certainly original and retains gilt scroll decoration, and limited scuffing entirely consistent with its age.

Nb. The vast majority of these trays have a black ground and are supported on modern stands. Venetian red, however – as seen in this fine example – is rare, as are green, blue and cream backgrounds. These latter colours will mostly be out of period.
These trays, in any colour, may sometimes erroneously be referred to as lacquer. Our antique tray on offer here is a lovely example of English japanning.
