Description

A rare George III-period mid-18th century mahogany Gainsborough library armchair of deep, rich colour and patination.

The supremely-comfortable padded back above a padded seat, the padded armrests on the very crisply-carved gently-outswept arms, on conformingly-carved square legs retaining its original castors. In over 70 years we have not had another Gainsborough with seaweed and fish scale carving.

This beautiful chair has very generous proportions and displays the hallmarks of superb English cabinetmaking: note the quality of craftsmanship of the mid-18th century. Incorporating a most unusual and quite charming design in the well-executed carving – a rare survivor in lovely condition throughout. Professionally upholstered with floral fabric of vivid colours, ready to use in any room of the house.

From a notable private London art and antiques collection.
