Description

This antique English oak chest Charles II period 1630-1685 has a well figured moulded top above four graduated drawers all faced with geometric mitering.

The drawer dividers with applied half round mouldings and the sides paneled. This chest divides into two sections. All drawers pull out on side runners. This feature is typical of 17th century construction.

Raised on front bun feet with short ‘stile’ feet to the back.

Period but possibly later ‘pear drop’ handles. Three of the brass ‘Crowned’ key escutcheons are original.

The top escutcheon is an 18th century replacement. ‘Crowned’ key escutcheons are often associated with the restoration period of King Charles 11 Ca. 1660.

Old waxed surfaces all of good colour.

These Charles 11 oak chests when ‘in period’ are always of solid construction with substantial drawer linings with large dovetails, often reinforced with hand wrought nails.
