Description

A very well-drawn, highly decorative and sophisticated pair of Regency-style window seats.
Finely decorated by hand, in grey, with anthemions (anthemia) and lines on an ebonised ground.
Now upholstered in genuine zebra hide, and close nailed.
A faithful version of a fine period pair – circa 1810 – which we sold from our stock in the 1950’s.

The design of this Grecian-style window seat was popularised by the firm of Morgan & Saunders, Trafalgar House, Catherine street, Strand, London (R. Ackermann’s Regency Furniture & Interiors, London (1984) p. 39, plate 1).

A closely-related window seat by the firm is illustrated in R. Ackermann, The Repository of Arts, London (1809) also takes an X-form and is edged with gilding. As noted in the text, the “design would have a very good effect executed in bronze, with the rosettes, fillets, and other ornaments of the frame, in mat gold”4 (sic, figure 2).

Nb. A pair of small size window seats in mahogany in the manner of Morgan and Saunders sold Sothebys, London, on 4th June 2008 @ £12,500.
