Description

Nb. This rare small size George II period (1683-1760) walnut bureau remarkably survives in its original state.
Old, waxed patinated surfaces of rich mellow colour.
Oak carcass with pine drawer fronts. Fitted interior with small drawers and arcaded pigeon holes.
Being only 2’3” wide is highly exceptional, as are the fine original gilt-bronze rococo mounts. The ovolo lip moulded drawer fronts help date this to circa 1740.

A similar but slightly later George II period walnut bureau was in the pre-war Percival Griffiths collection. Sold prior to the 1939 sale at Christie’s, London, of the remainder of the collection.
