Description

Chinese famille rose enameled jar of impressive large size, and in superb condition. Approx. 25″ tall. 14” diameter.
Late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). These were mainly produced for export from the Chinese port of Canton.

Vibrantly enamelled overall with reserves of typical foliage, flowers, insects, and the exotic phoenix.

Sometimes these large lidded jars are referred to as Cantonese Temple Jars.
Often seen in grand English interiors and displayed on fine 18th century pier tables in a long gallery.

NB. The Phoenix is an ancient Chinese mythological bird and a portent of good fortune. Also referred to in the English tradition as the HoHo bird.

Commonly these Canton jars are decorated with traditional reserves depicting courtiers in an interior or landscape.

A barely visible fine hair crack near the base approx 3″ long, probably from firing.
