After the war Mrs L.R. Butchart-Maas – founder of Box House Antiques – was collecting and dealing in antique pictures by Dutch and Flemish old masters. She was initially being guided by Sir Anthony Blunt at the Courtauld Institute. At that time there was a relatively good supply of antique pictures. As we get into the 1950’s genuine old masters with provenance became scarcer, with many copies being offered on the market. See: www.painting.about.com/od/artsupplies/gr/ArtForgerHandbk
Box House Antiques began to concentrate more on good, decorative and reasonably priced 18th and 19th century pictures. These are carefully selected to complement both antique and contemporary furniture, and interior decoration, whilst still representing good value for money.
