Description

A Chinese famille rose enameled jar of impressive large size and in superb condition.
Late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Mainly produced for export from the Chinese port of Canton.

Measures:
64 cm/ 25″ tall.
36 cm/ 14” diameter.

Vibrantly enameled overall with reserves of typical foliage, flowers, insects and the exotic phoenix.

Sometimes these large antique lidded jars are referred to as Cantonese Temple Jars.
Often seen in grand English interiors, displayed on fine 18th century pier tables in a long gallery.

Nb. The Phoenix is an ancient Chinese mythological bird and a portent of good fortune. Also referred to in the English tradition as the Hoho bird.

Commonly these large Canton jars are decorated with traditional reserves depicting courtiers in an interior or landscape.
Nb. a barely visible fine hair crack near the base, approx 3″ long – probably from firing – overall in excellent condition.
